Andris Nelsons has had to withdraw from today’s concert as he has had to return home to Riga, where his baby daughter is in intensive care. We wish them all well, and are grateful to Michael Seal, the CBSO’s Associate Conductor, for agreeing to stand in at short notice. The programme remains unchanged.
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra makes a welcome return to The Bridgewater Hall under its Latvian Principal Conductor Andris Nelsons, a musician described as ‘The greatest and brightest hope on the international conductor’s scene’. In its own way Beethoven’s lyrical Fourth Piano Concerto is as revolutionary as his fist-shaking Third and Fifth Symphonies. It begins in the most poetic manner and even in its witty finale there are moments of great serenity and introspection. Sibelius’s extraordinary Second Symphony has been named a ,Liberation Symphony: a musical expression of Finnish resistance to Russian imperialism. True or not, it evinces a strong sense of heroic struggle.
