Experience Shakespeare through Music & Storytelling
This project was developed during 2016, the 400th Anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, and brings two of Shakespeare’s best loved plays to KS2 pupils in an accessible and hands on way through these full day workshops.
Working with CBSO cellist Jackie Tyler and Performance Storyteller Pyn Stockman, pupils will experience the love entanglements of A Midsummer Night’s Dream or the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet through interactive story-telling and the music of Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky.
Each workshop takes place over a full school day, and Jackie and Pyn can work with up to 60 KS2 children during the day (or 2 x classes). Throughout the day pupils will:
- engage with a lively interactive performance of approximately 45 minutes;
- participate in creative music sessions – including composition and song-writing activities;
- participate in story-board and theatre work activities;
- share their creative work to the rest of the school and parents at the end of the day.
Only one play – Romeo and Juliet or A Midsummer Night’s Dream – will form the basis of the day’s activities, and you can select which play you would like to focus on. The exact format and timings of the day of activity can be negotiated with the artists to ensure that the project fits within your school day.
Finally, Pyn Stockman is a qualified Arts Award practitioner who has recently undertaken the RSC Shakespeare and Arts Award training day, and involvement in these sessions provide an ideal component for children undertaking the Arts Award Shakespeare Challenge.
In addition to the workshop Jackie and Pyn are also able to offer a 2 hour CPD session for KS1 and KS2 teachers which provides an exploration of storytelling techniques and music making to inspire creative performance making around the themes of the two plays. (This will incur an additional cost)
A Shakespeare in Action workshop takes place over a full school day, and can accommodate up to 60 KS2 pupils (or 2 classes). A full day workshop costs £600, to book your visit or for more information please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0121 616 6522.
