Dvoraks Cello Concerto.

  • Beethoven The Creatures of Prometheus: Overture5′
  • Dvořák Cello Concerto42′
  • Shostakovich Symphony No. 630′

In Stalin’s Russia composers sometimes had to laugh, or they’d cry. Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony begins in tragedy, and ends with a circus parade. Guest conductor Alexander Vedernikov brings out the laughter and the tears; storms the heavens with Ludwig van Beethoven, and joins cellist Paul Watkins in the most romantic of all cello concertos: 40 minutes of heartfelt poetry and soaring emotion.

CBSO+ 6.15pm: A pre-concert performance of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring by the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Seal.
