Programme

  • Glinka Ruslan and Ludmila: Overture
  • Tchaikovsky  Marche Slave
  • Takemitsu  Star-Isle
  • Glazunov  Symphony No. 5

They called him “the Russian Mendelssohn” – but if you don’t know the music of Alexander Glazunov, try and imagine Rachmaninov, but with a smile on his face! Sweeping, songful and glittering with Russian colour, this is some of the most gorgeous music you’ve never heard: no wonder Kazuki Yamada loves it. Today he conducts the CBSO’s first ever performance of Glazunov’s Fifth Symphony, “The Heroic” - the climax of a programme drenched in magical sounds and great tunes. That means high adventure and Imperial splendour from two of Glazunov’s personal heroes – Glinka and Tchaikovsky - and a glimpse of the infinite, in Toru Takemitsu’s shimmering musical constellation Star-Isle. You’re in for a treat.
