“Other composers mix colourful cocktails” said Jean Sibelius. “I serve pure, cool water”. And there’s nothing that quite matches the elemental strength of Sibelius’ monumental Seventh Symphony, or the power with which he retells the ancient Finnish legend of Pohjola’s Daughter. In an inspired stroke, the great Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä has matched Sibelius with the timeless serenity of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, played by the breathtaking Ning Feng.
