- Liadov Kikimora, 7′
- Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor, 27′
- Shostakovich Symphony No. 8, 62′
As the USSR faced the onslaught of Nazi Germany, Shostakovich poured his feelings into a symphony on a truly epic scale. Shostakovich’s Eighth is music wrought from blood, fire and steel – massive, uncompromising, and so powerful that after the War, the Soviet authorities banned it. It’ll make a gripping return for guest conductor Cristian Măcelaru; and with Akiko Suwanai as soloist, Mendelssohn’s much-loved concerto will make a truly poignant contrast.
CBSO+ 6.15pm: Award-winning Romanian-born conductor Cristian Măcelaru will be in conversation with CBSO Chief Executive Stephen Maddock.
For events sold by THSH Box Office, the THSH per-ticket commission of £3 (£2.50 for online bookings) is included in the price of every individual ticket priced over £13, with the exception of tickets purchased as part of a CBSO concert package.
