- Tippett Piano Concerto, 34′
- Beethoven Leonore Overture No. 3, 13′
It’s springtime in old Russia, and as crowds throng the Shrovetide Fair, passions are rising. But a puppet can’t have feelings … can it? Stravinsky’s Petrushka is just the ear-tingling opening to this multi-coloured concert, as Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla teams up with powerhouse pianist Steven Osborne in the vibrant piano concerto that Tippett wrote specially for the CBSO – and goes all-out for the heroism of Beethoven’s stirring Leonore overture.
Part of The Spirit of England.
CBSO+ 6.15pm (Symphony Hall): 180 primary school children from across the city reveal what Birmingham means to them in a new piece of music theatre, Spirit of Birmingham, commissioned by Qatar Airways.
Please note that the previously advertised pre-concert talk on Sir Michael Tippett has been cancelled. The CBSO apologises for any disappointment caused, and warmly invites concertgoers to the pre-concert performance by Birmingham schoolchildren.
For events sold by THSH Box Office, the THSH per-ticket commission of £3 (£2.50 for online bookings) is included in the price of every individual ticket priced over £13. Tickets purchased as part of a CBSO Concert Package are exempt. For full details see cbso.co.uk/terms.
