Blazing with colour and teeming with imagination, the music of the CBSO’s old friend Julian Anderson has always gone down a storm here in Birmingham, and to celebrate our centenary he’s written Litanies - a cello concerto with a magical difference. It’s played tonight by another great friend of the CBSO: Alban Gerhardt, the cellist who inspired it, and an artist who acknowledges no limits. Fauré’s enchanted garden of mock-baroque melodies gets things off to a deceptively graceful start. And then our charismatic principal guest conductor Kazuki Yamada unleashes the elegant hi-jinks of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella. Imagine a handful of 18th century composers, thrown into a cocktail shaker with ice-cold vodka and a twist of lemon, and don’t miss this rare complete performance of one of the Jazz Age’s wittiest scores.
CBSO+ 6pm: Join Helen Edgar - Tutti Cello - and composer Julian Anderson as they talk about his Centenary Commission.
Please note the pre-concert talk will now start at 6pm, 15 minutes earlier than previously advertised, due to the Making an Entrance redevelopments. You will be asked to show your ticket for access into the pre-concert talk, and then invited to take your seat for the concert immediately after the talk concludes. Times of talks will be listed on the concert pages of the CBSO and THSH’s websites in advance, please check before making travel plans.
The commissioning of Julian Anderson's Litanies has been made possible with generous support from John Cole and Jennie Howe.
For events sold by THSH Box Office, the THSH per-ticket commission of £3 (£2.50 for online bookings) is included in the price of every individual ticket priced over £13. Tickets purchased as part of a CBSO Concert Package are exempt. For full details see cbso.co.uk/terms.
