Vaughan Williams.

  • Vaughan Williams  Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis15′
  • Bax November Woods 20′
  • Vaughan Williams Five Tudor Portraits 45′

For Vaughan Williams, the spirit of England wasn’t just in the tranquillity of his radiant Tallis Fantasia. His Five Tudor Portraits turned the roistering antics of a bunch of Elizabethan eccentrics into the most uproariously enjoyable choral showpiece you’ve never heard. Arnold Bax, meanwhile, sings of doomed romance in a wintry twilight. John Wilson simply loves this music: join him, and rediscover a musical heritage that belongs to us all.

Part of The Spirit of England.

CBSO+ 6.15pm: Broadcaster and author Stephen Johnson talks about Vaughan Williams as the founder of the nationalist movement in English music.
