Jaume Santonja Espinós was named as the CBSO's next Assistant Conductor in June 2018
Jaume is currently principal percussionist from the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and since the 2016-17 season has been Assistant Conductor of the Orquesta de Extremadura (Spain).
Jaume has led concerts with the Orquesta de Extremadura, The World Orchestra - ADDA Simfònica (Alicante), Spanish National Youth Orchestra, Orquesta de Córdoba, Orchestra of Utrecht's Conservatory (Holland) and Antwerp's Conservatory Orchestra (Belgium). He was musical director of the Symphonisch Jeugorkest Edegem and founder of AbbatiaViva music collective.
Upcoming engagements will bring him to assist Maestro Pablo González with the Spanish National Youth Orchestra JONDE and appear in the Orquesta de Extremadura's 2018-19 subscription concerts.
Jaume has seen success at various international conducting contests and holds a Master of Music (Conducting) from the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (Belgium) and a Master of Music (Percussion) from the Amsterdam Conservatorium (Holland). He studied for his Bachelor's degree at ESMuC (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain).
As a player Jaume has had the pleasure to work with world-class orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Spanish National Orchestra, as well as the CBSO. He has played under conductors like Mariss Jansons, Daniele Gatti, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Valery Gergiev, Pierre Boulez, Andris Nelsons, Zubin Mehta, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. As student he was a member of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and the Verbier Festival Orchestra.
Jaume also works as a musical arranger and orchestrator, and even has a small number of his own compositions, mainly for chamber music (another of his passions).
