Chair, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra

Closing Date

Job description

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is the flagship of musical life in Birmingham and the West Midlands – and one of the world’s great orchestras.

Resident in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall, the CBSO and its ensembles typically give over 150 concerts each year in Birmingham, the UK and around the world, playing music that ranges from classics to contemporary, film scores and even symphonic disco. With a far-reaching community programme and a family of choruses and youth ensembles, it’s involved in every aspect of music-making in the Midlands. At its centre is a team of 90 superb professional musicians, and a 100-year tradition of making the world’s greatest music, in the heart of Birmingham.

It is a hugely exciting time for CBSO as we approach, amongst other things, the opening in 2023 of Shireland CBSO Academy, a free school in collaboration with Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust. This will be the first ever free school with a specific musical focus, and will operate in one of the most deprived boroughs of the country, representing the depth of our passion for music and our commitment to making this accessible to all.

As our Chair, David Burbidge CBE, comes to the end of his term, we are seeking a new Chair to support us on the next stage of our journey, who will be a strong source of support to our Executive and organisation as we achieve our principal purpose of providing a wide access to music for audiences and participants, within the West Midlands region and beyond.

We would welcome applications from a broad range of individuals for the role; a current understanding of the arts and cultural sector and the challenges facing it would be of particular value to the Board at this time. It is crucial that applicants share our passion for music and will be an effective advocate on our behalf in various fora.
