The CBSO is inviting applications from young musicians and singers to join the Youth Orchestra, Junior Children’s Chorus, Children’s Chorus and Youth Chorus from September 2021. It’s been a tough 18 months for all musicians, but particularly for young musicians for whom rehearsing and performing within an ensemble of like-minded peers is so often the inspiration to keep practising and developing their musical talents.
The CBSO has been supporting the musical development of young people through our ensembles for over 25 years, providing them with unique opportunities to work with some of the world's leading conductors and soloists on interesting, exciting and challenging repertoire. All ensembles are led by a team of exceptional conducting talent – Ula Weber (Junior Children’s Chorus), Julian Wilkins (Children’s Chorus and Youth Chorus) and Michael Seal (Youth Orchestra) – and perform to the very highest standards in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall.
The CBSO Youth Orchestra is recruiting for young instrumentalists aged 13 – 21 who are of at least Grade 7 standard (strings) or Grade 8 standard (wind, brass, percussion, harp and keyboard). The application process is simple! Complete an application online, wait for your information pack to be sent through, then submit your filmed audition! Successful applicants will take part in up to three Youth Orchestra courses throughout the 21/22 academic year. Find out more and apply here.
Deadline for applications for the CBSO Youth Orchestra is Monday 28th June.
The CBSO Junior Children’s Chorus is a new ensemble for the 2021/22 academic year. There are no auditions to join this ensemble, and children don’t need to be able to read music, you just need to complete an online application form. This choir is designed to provide younger singers (boys and girls) in school years 3 – 5, with a fun introduction to choral singing and musicianship under the leadership of Ula Weber. We will also be providing all members with an opportunity to develop their understanding of music theory and notation through free lessons provided by Services for Education. Find out more and apply here.
You can apply at any time to join the Junior Children’s Chorus, but to guarantee a place from September, please apply by 31st July.
The CBSO Children’s Chorus will be slightly different in the 2021/22 academic year, and will now provide opportunities for children (girls and boys with unchanged voices) in school years 6 – 8, enabling them to develop their vocal skills and musicianship with Julian Wilkins. This ensemble will learn a range of different music, including core classical repertoire, and members will again be offered free music theory activities and vocal coaching as part of their membership. There is no need to be able to read music to join this choir, but all applicants are invited to an audition prior to joining. This is nothing to worry about, and more an opportunity for Julian to meet singers and help him decide which voice part they will be most suited to. Find out more and apply here.

The CBSO Youth Chorus is one of the leading youth choirs in the UK, not only performing regularly with the CBSO, but also with other orchestras throughout the UK, and perform independently at home and aboard! This choir is for girls in school years 9 – 13, and members do need to have a basic ability to read musical notation to join this ensemble. There is an audition, but this is nothing to worry about, it is to enable us to ensure that members are singing the right part within the choir and to make sure that bad vocal habits are not creeping in! From September we will also be able to offer members free vocal coaching, and we are introducing a residential summer school from July/August 2022! Find out more and apply here.
