On Sunday we were honoured to be the Orchestra performing with the three talented finalists in the Grand Final of BBC Young Musician 2018. The concert - broadcast on BBC Four TV and BBC Radio 3 - was hosted by our beloved home venue of Symphony Hall, making it an even more special evening.
The performances from all three finalists were outstanding; cellist Maxim Calver played Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme and saxophonist Robert Burton shared Paul Creston's Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra. The overall winner was Lauren Zhang, a 16-year-old pianist studying at the Junior Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. She performed Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto to rapturous applause from a sold-out Symphony Hall audience.
Completing what was an amazing musical story for our city, we were also very proud to see our friend, CBSO Youth Orchestra alumnus and former Assistant Conductor, Birmingham-born Alpesh Chauhan, on the judging panel. And as if that wasn't enough, the panel chair Kerry Andrew worked with the CBSO on our recent World War One education project, composing a new musical work alongside primary school children.
There was plenty of positive buzz via social media on Sunday, plus some press reviews. We've collected them here...
