Hosted by broadcaster and long-standing CBSO member Alan Titchmarsh and then by former CBSO violinist David Gregory, CBSO: Behind the Music - an exclusive CBSO members virtual event series - has seen a huge variety of members and friends of the orchestra interviewed on Zoom over the past six months.
Over the past year we have been unable to host our usual series of members’ events and so, following the success of a short series of webinars last year and with the onset of the three-month lockdown in January 2021, we launched the Behind the Music event series. The series has given members the chance to find out more about the CBSO, with a look behind the scenes and exclusive insight into our world-class orchestra and the people who make it tick.
Since January, we have heard from 36 people across 17 episodes. Much-loved broadcaster Alan Titchmarsh (a CBSO member himself) hosted the first six sessions before passing on the baton to former CBSO violinist David Gregory for the rest of the series. David retired at the end of 2019 after over 40 years of playing with the orchestra.
Members of the orchestra have filled us in on everything they do from performing on stage and in ensembles, to making and maintaining their instruments, as well as the huge variety of roles they hold off the stage. We also heard from the CBSO Youth Ambassadors, those involved in a number of our youth and education projects, the CBSO Chorus, the CBSO Library and those behind the digital recording of concerts and recruitment of musicians. Associate Conductor Mike Seal and Leader Eugene Tzikindelean shared their thoughts about music, their careers and lives during lockdown.
“I joined the Friends of CBSO in January as I wanted to support the orchestra, but I thought you might like to know how much I'm enjoying the webinars. I'm learning a lot about the technicalities of different instruments (the reed-making was a highlight) and how players work together. For someone like me, with no musical education and background, this is going to enhance my appreciation of those great live concerts." Angela Thomson, Friend
“They have been a wonderful way for us to get to know the CBSO ‘family’ a bit better.”
Marion Thompson, Friend
"It’s almost like a cosy chat with friends in my living room!"
Alan Faulkner, Overture Circle
All CBSO members have the chance to sit in on rehearsals, to meet musicians at our afternoon teas and other special events, and to receive behind-the-scenes news, as well as priority booking before concerts go on sale to the general public. Joining as a member also helps us to recover from the Covid crisis and all gifts are currently being matched pound for pound by a generous member of our campaign board.
