We are delighted to announce that the CBSO will perform with the finalists of BBC Young Musician 2018, in the Grand Final to be broadcast from Symphony Hall, Birmingham.
On Sunday 13 May 2018, three talented young musicians will each perform a full concerto with the CBSO and conductor Mark Wigglesworth, in front of television cameras and a distinguished panel of judges. At the end of the evening the winner of BBC Young Musician 2018 will be announced.
Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the young cellist who won BBC Young Musician 2016 and has today released his debut album featuring the CBSO, will also perform as part of the concert.
This year sees the 40th anniversary of the first ever BBC Young Musician. Ever since that first final in 1978, the competition has developed a reputation for its ability to launch a seriously impressive career; Alison Balsom, Nicola Benedetti, Natalie Clein, Nicholas Daniel, Benjamin Grosvenor, Stephen Hough, Tasmin Little and Jennifer Pike are all alumni. Our very own Adrian Spillett - Section Leader Percussion - won the competition in 1998.
