Joe Godwin is Director, BBC Midlands and BBC Academy.
Appointed to the role of Director of BBC Birmingham in December 2014, he is responsible for pan-Birmingham BBC initiatives, developing external partnerships and the overall leadership of the three BBC sites in the city. In June 2016 his remit was extended across the whole of the Midlands.
As Director of the BBC Academy - the UK media sector's biggest skills trainer – Joe is responsible for maintaining and growing the skill levels of the BBC's world class content makers, journalists and digital creatives across the UK and overseas.
Prior to this role, Joe was Director of BBC Children's 2009-2014. The BBC is the leading children's public service broadcaster in the world and Joe was responsible for all of the BBC's services for children on CBBC and CBeebies.
He joined BBC Children’s as a trainee in 1989 moving through the ranks as an assistant producer, studio director and producer on hit shows such as Blue Peter, Going Live and Record Breakers and then became Editor of Children's Presentation (1997-2000), Head of BBC Children’s Entertainment (2005-2008) and Head of News, Factual and Entertainment for BBC Children’s (2008-2009).
From 2000 to 2005, Joe was at Nickelodeon UK, holding a number of posts including Head of Original Production and VP Interactive Director.
Joe started his BBC career at BBC Southampton in 1986 following his graduation from Manchester University.
Joe is also a member of the Advisory Panel on Children's Viewing of the British Board of Film Classification.
