Jonathan Holland

Section Leader Trumpet

Born in Sale, Greater Manchester, Jon grew up in Yorkshire and began his musical life playing in brass bands aged 9 years old. He went on to study at the Royal College of Music under David Mason, accepting a position in the CBSO whilst in his third year. He joined as 3rd Trumpet playing 1st as required and became Section Leader Trumpet in 1987, his current position.

Jon has freelanced with most British orchestras and played as a guest with a number of international ensembles. He has regularly played with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group since its foundation in 1987 and has a keen interest in contemporary repertoire. Jon also works at Birmingham Conservatoire as Trumpet tutor.

Jon has recently marked 30 years with the orchestra, and has many highlights with each of three principal conductors he has worked with; including Mahler 2 with Simon Rattle, a Sibelius cycle with Sakari Oramo and Lohengrin with Andris Nelsons.

Outside of music Jon is a keen runner (having completed 6 half marathons to date) and enjoys walking in the nearby Malvern hills with his dog.
