Jonathan Martindale

Assistant Leader

Born in Manchester, Jonathan studied with Leland Chen at the Royal Northern College of Music where he was one of the first students to be awarded the Hallé/RNCM Artist Diploma in Orchestral Leadership. After leaving college, Jonathan became a member of Manchester Camerata and also freelanced with the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields with performances taking him throughout Europe, the Far East and Australia, as well as to the BBC Proms.

In 2013 Jonathan was then appointed sub-principal Second Violin in the Royal Northern Sinfonia later becoming Principal Second Violin (no.2). During his time with the orchestra Jonathan has performed as a soloist as well as frequently performing as part of the Chamber Ensemble.

Chamber Music is also a major part of Jonathan’s musical life and as a founding member of the Eblana String Trio, formed in 2006 at the RNCM, he is soon to celebrate ten years of performing. With the trio he has performed regularly for festivals and music societies throughout the UK and further afield as well as performing live on BBC Radio 3 and attending the International Musicians’ Seminar at Prussia Cove. The trio have also recently become Park Lane Group artists and will perform at St John Smiths Square later this season. Between 2013 and 2015 the trio were also Junior Fellows in Chamber Music at Birmingham Conservatoire.

Jonathan also enjoys teaching and is a Visiting Tutor in Chamber Music at Birmingham Conservatoire, as well as a Tutor of violin at Manchester University.

With any spare time he has, Jonathan enjoys cooking and eating out, as well as the occasional game of tennis!
