Kate Suthers

Section Leader Second Violin

Violinist Kate Suthers joined the CBSO in May 2016.  She continues to enjoy a busy and varied career around the UK, leading the award-winning Artesian Quartet and working in guest principal roles with a number of other British symphony orchestras.  Kate also enjoys smaller ensemble work, especially projects with Scottish Ensemble, Aurora Orchestra and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Her work has taken her around the world, touring throughout Europe and Scandinavia, as well as to the USA and Asia.

Kate studied with Gyorgy Pauk at the Royal Academy of Music. Among many experiences during her time there, highlights included leading Scheherazade under Yan Pascal Tortelier, performing Le Histoire du Soldat at Kings Place with Dame Harriet Walter, and leading the 2nd violins in the world premiere of Peter Maxwell Davies' opera Kommilitonen!. It was also in her first year at the Academy that she co-founded the Artesian Quartet. After completing undergraduate and Masters degrees, Kate stayed on at the Academy with her quartet for a further year as CAVATINA chamber fellows in 2014-15. During that year they were also selected as a ChamberStudio @ Kings Place quartet and had previously been both Park Lane Group and Britten Pears artists.

Born and raised in Sydney, Kate made the move to the UK in 2004 but loves getting back to Australia when she can to see her family, including her two lovely nephews. Kate is an avid reader, a coffee fanatic, a lover of both cooking and eating food, particularly the recipes of Yotam Ottolenghi.

Kate plays a Carletti violin from Bologna, c.1920-25.
