Michael Kidd

Principal Second Horn

Born in Swindon, Michael grew up in Manchester, and credits ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ as his inspiration for taking up the horn aged eight – “one day at school an older boy played it on the horn in a talent show - it didn't occur to me that I could play that tune on any instrument - I had to play the horn!”

Michael started learning with David Golightly, before going to Chetham's School of Music where he was taught by Lizzie Davis. He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Richard Watkins and Michael Thompson.

Prior to joining the CBSO in 2015 Michael played with many orchestras in London and around the country including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. As a guest player with the CBSO before he joined he particularly enjoyed the performance of Parsifal in Vienna.

Outside of music Michael enjoys reading, cooking and DIY.
