Ulf Åberg

Tutti Viola

Ulf was born in the Swedish University town of Uppsala. He says he wanted to play the violin from as early as he can remember but was put off temporarily at the age of six ‘when seeing a really old and ugly folk fiddler’. He then started learning the violin at the age of nine and the viola at 12.

Ulf studied in Sweden with the Czech Professor J Kodousek before undertaking post-graduate study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Professor David Takeno. Before joining the CBSO Ulf did freelance chamber and orchestral work in Sweden and had a trial with the Welsh National Opera.

As Tutti Viola with the CBSO, Ulf has a number of highlights including concerts and tours with three different Music Directors: Sir Simon Rattle, Sakari Oramo and Andris Nelsons. He also cites chamber music performances with Vadim Repin, Lisa Batiashvili, Truls Mork and colleagues, as well as creative music-making projects in a primary school in a deprived area of Birmingham.

Ulf’s hobbies outside of the orchestra include photography, calligraphy, web design and the invention of abstract board games. He is married to CBSO violinist Julia and they have a four-year-old son.
