Baltic Way

They called it the “Baltic Way” – the moment in August 1989 when 2 million people joined hands across the Baltic States in protest against Soviet tyranny. Just months later, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were reborn as free nations. As a Lithuanian, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla has never forgotten the power of that moment, and 100 years since the Baltic states’ creation in 1918, and 30 years since their liberation in 1989, we celebrate with a chain of Baltic-themed musical events: welcoming the great Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica, performing Čiurlionis’s The Sea on Lithuania’s national day, exploring music from the Baltic shores of Russia, Poland, Scandinavia and Germany, and recreating our very own version of the Baltic states’ great annual Song Festivals – right here in Birmingham.
