Kazuki conducts Beethoven's 5th Symphony

A fascinating concerto from Haydn, and Beethoven in contrasting moods.
Kazuki’s Beethoven cycle continues with two symphonies often defined as chalk and cheese. No.4 has been described as a ‘slender maiden’ between the heavyweight No.3 and tempestuous No.5. Overall, it exudes a wonderful air of calm good spirits, and can feel like an absolute tonic in turbulent times. Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto is similarly high-spirited, reflecting the composer’s evident glee at writing for the newly invented ‘valve’ instrument. ‘Trumpeter extraordinaire’ Matilda Lloyd takes the solo spot. Beethoven’s Fifth hardly needs an introduction, suffice it to say that even after two centuries its opening bars are still as electrifying as ever.
