Job Description

The CBSO is seeking to appoint a Section Leader Cello.

We're looking for an outstanding Section Leader Cello, following the departure of Eduardo Vassallo after 35 years with the orchestra. This is a rare opportunity to lead a vibrant, ambitious cello section; to work closely with Music Director, Kazuki Yamada; and to join an orchestra celebrated for its artistic excellence, innovative programming, and warm, collaborative culture.

From Birmingham's iconic Symphony Hall to major venues across Europe and beyond, CBSO musicians enjoy a rich touring schedule. You’ll perform in iconic concert halls, collaborate with leading conductors and soloists, and bring incredible music to audiences worldwide.

Candidates should demonstrate through their application form, experience of leading an orchestral cello section and excellence in performance in a professional context. We will also consider candidates who are in the earlier stages of their career and can clearly demonstrate their potential to fulfil the role.

This position will be part of the Section Leader forum, and the successful candidate will, in addition to performance, be expected to:

  • Manage the cello section, including preparing bowings.
  • Sit on recruitment panels and attend auditions as required.
  • Attend Section Leader meetings.

The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to perform solo works with the orchestra. Any applicants who have previously auditioned or trialled for a CBSO Section Leader Cello role are welcome and encouraged to apply for this position.
