Sir Mark Grundy joined the CBSO Board of Trustees in 2024, bringing extensive experience in educational leadership, organisational development and community engagement. He served as the long-standing Chief Executive Officer of Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust, leading the Trust from its formation and previously serving as Principal of its founding school, Shireland Collegiate Academy in Smethwick. He now continues to support the organisation as Trust Board Advisor.

With a career in education spanning more than four decades, Sir Mark has been a passionate advocate for raising aspirations and improving life chances for young people. His leadership has been instrumental in establishing a culture of excellence across the schools within the Trust, guided by the principle that "nothing less than outstanding is acceptable." He has also contributed to educational policy and school improvement at both regional and national levels, including advising the West Midlands Regional Schools Commissioner.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to education and technology, Sir Mark was awarded a knighthood in 2006. Throughout his career he has been recognised for pioneering approaches to digital learning, educational innovation and partnership working, helping to create opportunities for thousands of young people across the region.

Sir Mark has played a particularly important role in the relationship between the CBSO and education through the development of Shireland CBSO Academy, the first state school in the United Kingdom established in partnership with a professional orchestra.

As a CBSO Trustee, Sir Mark brings valuable expertise in leadership, governance, education and strategic partnerships. His experience of building successful institutions and creating innovative opportunities for young people supports the Orchestra's commitment to inspiring future generations through music and learning.

In 2025, Sir Mark announced his intention to retire as Chief Executive Officer of Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust at the end of the 2025/26 academic year, concluding an educational career of more than 40 years. He will continue to support the Trust in an advisory capacity, reflecting his enduring commitment to education and community development across the West Midlands.
