Introduction

Musicals have always held such magic for me, growing up watching my family and friends performing in the local amateur theatre - the sequins and glitter, the dancing and drama - all of this was part of the intoxicating thrill of the theatre for me. When the musicals are set in magical worlds that adds an even more enchanting dimension!

I’ve been very lucky to have played the ultimate magical role of Mary Poppins, not only having to act, sing and dance, but to perform wonderful magic tricks, pulling hatstands out of carpet bags and tidying up houses with the click of a finger (unfortunately not workable in real life) and to fly high over the audience at the end - right here in Birmingham! That was an experience I will never forget!

Tonight, we will take you on a magical journey through wondrous worlds of music, the streets of Agrabah with Aladdin, the famous chocolate factory of one Mr Willy Wonka, over the Rainbow to Oz with a double whammy of “Wizards” and “Wicked” witches and Into the Woods with Jack and his tales of his adventures at the top of the beanstalk.

Your magical theatrical journey tonight is guided by the magic wand of Michael England, along with top west end performers Steph McKeon who originated the role of Princess Anna in the London Cast of that incredibly magical musical Frozen, Rob Houchen, veteran of shows like Les Misérables and currently in new West End hit Titanique - but fear not, he has magical credentials, playing the role of the superhero in Eugenius as well as bringing his enchanting voice to every single role he plays. Last but most definitely not least is the incredible Trevor Dion Nicholas, direct from Hadestown via Georgetown (he played George Washington in Hamilton) but his first trip to perform for audiences here in the UK was via a magic lamp in a cave of treasures, the definitive Genie in the musical Aladdin both here and on Broadway.

We are all here to join forces with the bewitching CBSO to bring you a night of Musical Magic – I hope you have a simply spellbinding time!
