Introduction

An unmissable celebration of soul music, brought to life by a new generation of musicians. Each year, our free non-auditioned programme for young musicians aged 11-18 explores a different theme through orchestral arrangements created especially for this ensemble. This year we are pleased to welcome students from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire who join the ensemble as peer mentors across the wind and brass sections, and to be working with BIMM Gospel Choir as featured vocalists in this performance.

Each year Project Remix explores a different theme through orchestral arrangements created especially for the ensemble. We welcome traditional and non-traditional orchestral instrumentalists aged 11-18, including our Rhythm Section (Electric and Bass Guitars, Drum Kit and extended percussion section), and every section is tutored by one of the CBSO’s own players. This year we also welcome students from our prestigious Royal Birmingham Conservatoire training scheme, mentoring our younger players and getting involved with the CBSO’s lively Learning and Engagement programme.

Our young people rehearse throughout the spring term, playing contemporary music that you won’t see from other youth ensembles. We’re incredibly proud of the performance they produce and many of our players return for a number of years, bringing their developing skills to the Remix ensemble. In 2026 we’re excited to work with for the first time with BIMM Gospel Choir, conducted by Jerome Bucknor, as featured vocalists in our soul music inspired celebration. This will be their second collaboration with the CBSO and we are delighted to welcome them to Symphony Hall as featured vocalists for Project Remix.
