Helen Benson

Principal Piccolo
Headshot of piccolo player Helen Benson

Helen grew up on the south coast of England and studied flute at Chetham’s School of Music and Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Shortly after graduating, Helen was appointed Principal Piccolo of the Monterrey Symphony Orchestra, Mexico. The following year she relocated to Mexico City where she worked for the next six years as both a flautist and piccolo player with orchestras and ensembles including Mexico City Philharmonic, Mexico State Symphony Orchestra, Minería Symphony Orchestra, Bellas Artes Opera Orchestra, Bellas Artes Chamber Orchestra, Camerata de las Américas and Camerístas de México.

In 2012, Helen returned to Europe to undertake a Masters degree at the Swedish National Orchestra Academy in Gothenburg, studying flute with Håvard Lysebo and piccolo with Andrew Cunningham. During her time in Sweden, she was a regular guest with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Opera Orchestra and Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra.

At the end of her masters studies in 2014, Helen was appointed section flute/piccolo of the Oslo Philharmonic. During her eight years in Norway, Helen also regularly performed with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Norwegian Opera Orchestra, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra and Bergen Philharmonic as well as being a founding member of the Oslo-based contemporary music group Ensemble Temporum.

Helen was appointed Principal Piccolo of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 2022 and since then has also appeared as guest piccolo with orchestras such as the Hallé, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonia. She is also an active chamber musician in the CBSO Centre Stage series and a regular performer with Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG).

Alongside her busy performing career, Helen is a piccolo tutor at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and has served as a guest teacher at both Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Trinity Laban Conservatoire.
