Arensky String Quartet No.2 in A minor, Op.35 was written in 1894 and is unusually scored for violin, viola and two cellos. Arensky dedicated the piece to his friend Tchaikovsky who died the year before. Dense, melancholy harmonies dominate this work, with two cellos it gives the quartet a dark, but rich warm sound reminiscent of Schubert's String Quintet which also features in this programme.
